The answer is not easy, and it can be a daily fight. I tell you from experience. One of the words I now use to define me is “organized.” BUT this weekend, I struggled a bit. I finally got to clearing out my closet. As I was doing it, I realized my emotions were right in the middle of the decision making. I made three piles: keep — throw away — give away. One problem quickly surfaced: The “keep” pile was the only one that had items. Slowly, I started to use the 80/20 rule to clear out things I have not used in years. For those who are not familiar with the 80/20 also known as the Pareto Principle, it states that for many of your results, roughly 80% of the consequences come from 20% of the actions taken. This concept is important to understand as it helps you identify and prioritize what is going to make the most impact in your life.Fighting old programming is not easy; I know. During my childhood in Guatemala, survival was my driving force. That included not getting rid of anything and finding a way of keeping all because everything “should” be saved in case it was needed in the future. As a consultant and coach, I help people from my experience, not just from a certificate.
